Spring 2022 Devised Work - "This is Me"

This year's Broadway Revue THIS IS ME was presented in the Jerry R. Knight Auditorium at 7:00pm on Friday March 11th for one night only. We had a great audience and the cast and crew knocked it out of the park!

Miss Pettey took on the role of Director and had started the plans for the show well before we held auditions. She decided to do a devised work that included acting, singing and dancing. It would incorporate various songs but would put them under the premise of a day-in-the-life of a high schooler.

The display case turned out great and caught everyone's eye as they came into the school that week!

AUDITIONS
We held our auditions in the Black Box. There was a dance and singing portion and the performers were asked to come in for multiple days. We were seeking a diverse group of performers and we got exactly what we asked for, the cast was a wonderful mix of students that all brought something unique to the show.

Lauren Perry (center) led the cast in this energetic number.

Freya worked hard as one of the stage managers on this production.
There was a lot to track with this show as it was developed, and she did a great job helping Miss Pettey keep everything organized. There were many students involved in the creation of this piece.

The Costume Crew

The style and theme of the show was leaning toward a nod to punk and that time period was a challenge for the student designers. They did a little shopping, we pulled a little from stock, and several brought in things from their closet. To top it off we brought in a ton of safety pins, neon duck tape and fun craft supplies (all in neon colors).

The show was built on the stories and poems the cast wrote during the rehearsal period.
They also did improv exercises and movement work to create the stage picture.

The hair and make-up was also a huge part of the show. The cast was done up with cool punk hair styles and elaborate make-up in wild colors.

Anna De Foy was the featured ballerina in the evening's performance.
She acted as a narrator but with dance.

Miss Pettey choreographed multiple parts of the show that highlighted Anna's talents

The LIGHTING

Sarah Bailey worked on the production as the student lighting technician and board op. This position allows a student to see the whole process from light hang, gel/focus to the cue to cue and the programming of the show. Our board is still an oldie but a goodie and gives us the opportunity to keep the work challenging but easy on the teacher.

We had a lot of cues to program and not all of them got done at the cue to cue. We had to continue adding cues into the tech week. The show had a lot of light changes during songs and that is the toughest thing to time out right.

The cast had to spend the Sat before the show running through the show but stopping and starting constantly. We had to create the lighting and set the cue for each moment.

THE SOUND
The sound was operated by two different students. Luca Thies was up in the sound booth running all of the tracks for the singers and any of the transition music.

Joe Sit was our microphone board op for the show and he had done this for a previous show this year, so he was a pro.

The show also used several corded microphones on stands and had some of the performers in cordless lavs. Certain cast members needed to be able to do their songs and move around the stage. We decided from the previous show that setting up a sound booth in front of the stage gave us better reception from the lavs.

The Poster Designed by Mr Schaefer
Originally the show was called "Reflections", and it was renamed "This is Me" after several conversations and as we got the production closer to opening night. The song is used in the concert and the themes of the song had a direct connection to the whole message of the piece.

This was a theatrical "devised work" curated and partially written by the cast (and Director) over the course of many months. Some monologues, poetry and song excerpts were included from published work for the benefit of extracurricular dance/acting a song training and study.
